Back From The Dead For The Census
« on: Thursday 10 May 18 20:33 BST (UK) »
OK tell me I'm not mad.

According the 1851 census John Foley was 72 years old and born in Ireland.

So off I go looking for John's death post 1851 ... nothing that matches (I used the https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp).  So being a bit on the over cautious side I looked for a John prior to 1851 ... and I find this
Quote
FOLEY, JOHN       67
GRO Reference: 1849  M Quarter in ST GILES IN THE FIELDS & ST GEORGE BLOOMSBURY  Volume 01  Page 63

It looks like it matches all the criteria.

So could John be back from the dead to be go on the census ?

I'm a bit cautious about ordering the certificate if it's not him.

Any advice welcomed ... thanks in advance.

Hi

Why not just order the cert?

The 1849 maybe correct anyway.

Hi there,
I have found two instances of deceased children being included on 1911 census. On one the householder had also included the grown up children that were living elsewhere on census night. All these seem to have been picked up and crossed out in another hand.
I think you will only be sure by buying the certificate.
Regards, Tony.

If it is the same person, the age isn't correct. You say that he was 72 according to the 1851 census, however the death was for a 67 year old, your's would have been 70 in 1849.

Looking at the census I could understand it if it was a widow listing her husband in error, but he is listed as Father in law, so it does seem very strange to include him if he'd been dead for 2 years.

Could he have gone back to Ireland and died there?

Thanks for the input all.

It's certainly a bit confusing.

I think that John is still alive in 1851 ... as to where he died is another matter.
