Hi,
I am trying to find any information in regard to William Chivers b. 1861 who lived at Newbury, Berkshire and according to his burial records, was Company Quartermaster Sergeant Chivers in the Royal Berkshire Regiment (years unknown).   He migrated to Canada in 1908 where he belonged to the Lincoln Welland Regiment, Ontario.

William Chivers was married to Rebecca Lipscombe in Newbury in 1880.

If anyone could assist, would be most grateful.

Thanking you

I cannot see any surviving Army records fo him. You could try the Regimental museum, there is £35 charge for research.

Thank you, that is quite strange.   We live in Australia, so will have to give this a miss, I think.

If I am looking at the right person, in 1881 he is a journeyman Baker, 1891 a master baker, then in 1901 a butchers salesman. This doesn’t fit with someone born in 1861 reaching  the rank of CQMS (WO2) in the Army.

Thank you, yes I also wondered about that, it just doesn't fit, does it?    But the burial records in Canada, indicate otherwise.
Thank you anyway.

Just looking at the headstone photo suggests to me that he had probably been CQMS in the Lincoln & Welland Regiment and had previously served in the Royal Berkshire Regiment, not necessarily that he had been a CQMS in the Royal Berkshire Regiment.  Born February 13th 1862 per his death certificate.

Hi ShaunJ,
Yes I would agree with you, wonder what he did then in Newbury.  Quite a mystery.

Possibly he was a part-time soldier. The Royal Berkshire Regiment had a militia battalion from 1881, formerly the Royal Berkshire Militia.

Jan,
Are you aware there is Family Tree on Anc...y showing their son  Archibald John Chivers marrying in 1916 Ontario ? and his two children.

Also a passenger list of William Chiver aged 63 returning to England in Oct 1925
