« on: Friday 01 June 18 08:17 BST (UK) »
Hello.

Could you help me find evidence of the parents of William Bowman who married Janette Cattanach. Daughter of Anne Bowman 1777 - 1859. Parents name taken from death record of Ann. but i am unable to find baptism record for Ann, nor any records for William that might suggest who his parents are.

Marriage record for William and Janet found  - Crathie and Braemar,Aberdeen,Scotland 28 Jan 1767. but index only so no details of parents.

any help most appreciated.  :)

Did you look at any of these records on Scotlands People?

BOWMAN   WILLIAM   marriage JANET CATTANACH   28/01/1767   Crathie and Braemar

BOWMAN   WILLIAM   father WILLIAM BOWMAN   20/11/1774   Crathie and Braemar

BOWMAN   JANET death no age   22/01/1793   Crathie and Braemar

Possible birth records on SP. None in Aberdeenshire for William but several elsewhere, the nearest to Braemar noted below

CATANOCH JANET parents   JOHN CATANOCH & ISOBEL S. 21/09/1746   Glenmuick, Tullich and Glengairn

BOWMAN   WILLIAM   WILLIAM BOWMAN & JEAN LINDSAY    13/08/1748   Cortachy and Clova

thanks for these. Is it possible to subscribe to SP rather than using credits - seems an expensive way of doing it if you are just guessing and want to look at a lot of records.

SP is only pay to view by credits, however 30 credits £7:50 will give you 5 original records. If you are careful not to waste any it can be cost effective.

It's the only way of doing it online. Just be grateful it's Scotland's People at GBP1.50 a certificate and not England and Wales at GBP6 or GBP9.25 or various Australian states at ASD40 or more.

There is a cheaper way, which is to go to a Latter Day Saints (Mormon) Family History Centre near you and arrange to rent the microfilm of the Crathie and Braemar parish register, then you can scroll right through it and transcribe anything of interest. Some libraries in Scotland also have the microfilms - for Aberdeenshire both Aberdeen Public Library and the Aberdeen and North-East Scotland Family History Society have the ones for Aberdeenshire (including the parish of Glenmuick Tullich and Glengairn and the parish of Crathie and Braemar, both of which are in Aberdeenshire), and the ANESFHS has the ones for Angus if you want to look at Cortachy and Clova.

Do not expect a marriage record before 1855 to tell you the names of the couple's parents. A very small proportion may tell you the name of the bride's father but it is rare to get the groom's father and almost unheard of to get either of the mothers.

Also you must not assume that because there is only one likely candidate, it must be the right person. The further back you go, the more gaps there are in the records, and it may be that your ancestor's baptism record has not survived.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
