Eliza Benson's Grandparents
« on: Wednesday 06 June 18 18:49 BST (UK) »
I have got a baptism from 1810, Selby and can't work out one surname and one placename.

"Eliza Benson: 3rd daughter of Joseph Benson Oil Miller of Selby, son of Joseph Benson of Heddingley Farmer by Elizabeth daughter of James (I can't read his surname as it's split over two lines ) of Burlew,"   is it Burlew - or something else?

So Elizabeth, is Eliza's grandmother, and James her great grandfather  - but what is their surname and where is James from?

I've hit a brick-wall!

Thanks for any help.

Pam

Does the paper go any further to the left or is it spliced off there?

I wonder if surname is Iles and the other word is his occupation  :-\
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

A slightly larger clip would have shown it better, but I think the surname might be Murrah. With a Yorkshire accent I wouldn't rule out that it's a phonetic variant of Murray, though there are also some reasonably common Yorkshire names ending in -a or -ah.

I can't find anywhere called Burlew, but Headingley in Leeds is right next to Burley, so I suspect this may be what's meant. It's where I'd be inclined to look first, and since it's a Dade register (ie one with all those names) you already have quite a bit of information to check against.

Another tactic would be to look for the baptisms of any siblings for Eliza, as the entries might be a bit easier to make out.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Apologies for the tight crop, not much was lost, but here is a better one.

I was sent this Dade baptismal record by another Rootschatter.  Where can I get them online? I have access to Ancestry and Findmypast but they don't seem to deliver...

I was hoping to try and find siblings for Eliza, but not getting very far.

Selby Abbey registers and bishop's transcripts are at FindMyPast, but in this case I suggest also looking at Ancestry's collection of West Yorkshire records at https://www.ancestry.co.uk/yorkshire#

I found a number of Benson records in Leeds which might be relevant.
