Ancestry Updating Ethnicity Estimate
« on: Sunday 10 June 18 09:50 BST (UK) »
I only noticed this yesterday.
My trace elements are being dropped
I started off with
Ireland, Scotland, Wales 76%
Great Britain 19%
Iberian 2%
Finland/North West Russia 2%
European Jewish 1%

some in the family were very pleased to see the Finland/North West Russia as we have cases of Dupuytren's Disease in the family

but now they are changing me to
Ireland /Scotland 98%
England / Wales 2%

I know as such it doesn't make any difference and I don't care one way or the other but it was handy to say 'Oh yes that's our Finnnish ancestors leaving their mark on my hand.' :D

BTW

Anyone else get updated?

Yes,I noticed mine had changed a few days ago, there is not much difference in mine

Just to say, once you open the "new" version it does not appear possible to go back to the old one,so make a copy before "clicking" :)

Do you have the low confidence category?

I always thought that the slight contracture of my left little finger was from my Norse genes  ;D

Of course it is also widespread in some Mediterranean countries so it could be say your Spanish or Bosnian ancestors that left their mark on your hand  ;)

Its useful that the companies update these ethnicity guesses as then the penny drops with people that they are not worth the money they paid for them but of cause the diehard devotees will still swear by their "accuracy"  ::)
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

This thread prompted me to look, so thank you for that.

I started as
56% Great Britain
31% Europe West
13% Ireland/Scotland/Wales

although I never understood what was meant by Great Britain if Ireland, Scotland and Wales were a separate category  ???

Now, apparently, I'm
97% England/Wales
3% Sweden

Yikes!

I don't have it, my father had and my brother has it even worse, in both cases they were told it was Scandavian in origin. These things are always up for debate.

I was able to change it back yesterday but think I forgot when I checked it today. It did say it would change permanently at some stage so I took an image snip of it.

I'm back to 90% E&W 7% Ire & Scot and 3% Norway as I spotted for a day last month

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=794025.0

It appears I might have been a guinea pig.

Surely the key thing is that they say they have increased the number of reference samples from 3,000 to 16,000? Whatever that means.

The fact that MyHeritage has me at 53% Scandinavian (with the Ancestry data) just shows what a scam/bit of fun these ethnicity estimates are.

Back to the real stuff with the matches .....
