Who is Bucton Cowling?
« on: Saturday 16 June 18 01:55 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to trace a Bucton Cowling who married Margaret Beadnell 5 May 1818 in  Marylebone, Middlesex, England.

The name Bucton does not come in any searches that I have tried and he does not appear to be on any of the census.

I found his wife Margaret on the 1841 census living with her daughters and father but no sign of the mysterious Bucton.

I am guessing that Bucton is not actually his first name but can't think what it could be. - It appears a Bucton on his marriage cert and on his 2 daughters christenings.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Hi Fred,

I think Bucton is Burton.

Of interest is a baptism for a Mary Burton Cowling, d/o Joseph Cowling, druggist & Sarah, 27 Feb 1803 at St Alphege Greenwich.

There is a baptism on 1 May 1796 at Barton, Yorkshire for a Buckton Cowling s/o George & Margaret Cowling.

Added: Looking at the register the surname appears to be Cowlin.

If I'm looking at the right Margaret then in 1841 she's in Richmond. Yorkshire with daughters Ann & Jane.

Jane is presumably the Jane Hannah Beadnell Cowling baptised 28 Mar 1830 at Forcett, Yorkshire.  Mother named as Margaret Cowling, Widow.

Ann was possibly baptised at Richmond 3 Jun 1819, but parents are given as Thomas & Margaret :/

It wasn't unusual in Yorkshire for a child to be named with a surname used as a forename that is further back in the family tree. The mothers maiden surname or a grandparents surname. You might also find a cousin with a similar naming pattern

This marriage in 1744 might be a coincidence or it could be connected to your tree in some way, as the names are so distinctive and it is the same area

England Marriages, 1538–1973
marriage: 12th November -1744 - Richmond, Yorks, England
Elizabeth Buckton
spouse: George Cowling
