If you don't actually need the full birth certificate for official purposes (i.e. passport, driving licence, marriage etc), you can order a PDF copy from www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp for £6.

Sadly you can't Lizzie as it only applies to births up to 1917  :)

Births: 1837 –1917
Deaths: 1837 –1957

Oh that's sad,  :'(  of course I normally only order early certificates.  I guess it's the dratted 100 year rule is it for births?

I'm not sure if it's the 100 year rule so much as they haven't got round to digitising anymore dates than that yet,and of course no marriages at all yet.

From GRO:

Quote
Q11. Why are modern records not available as PDFs?

We are still working through the issues of making modern records available online and we have decided to remove them for the extended pilot.
Q12. Why aren't modern indexes available yet?

If GRO were to make modern indexes available, considerations would need to be given to public protection, customer service and technical capabilities. There are currently no plans to make modern indexes available.

So partly due to data protection I guess.

I guess marriages aren't shown because they're not digitized yet, but I think every marriage must have access to the public to witness it - I guess in case, late in the day, someone objects.

The records available by pdf were originally digitised as part of GRO projects, known as DOVE, EAGLE and MAGPIE.

The digitisation only covered births 1837-1934 & deaths 1837-1957 before the plugs were pulled.

No marriages were digitised.

This thread is interesting in that my TYPE written birth cert states I was born at the address where my parents lived, with UD typed beneath, except that I am 100% my mother told me I was born at the nearby hospital, unlike my siblings.

What does "UD" represent?

And would type written indicate that the cert was purchased at a later date, in which the info provided may have got confused?
