My gut feeling is that it's probably not as serious as it has been made out by the family. He likely did walk out and my Great Grandmother may have just told stories about him to keep her children away. Apparently she wasn't particularly nice herself anyway.

Do you know where the best place to check fro court proceedings would be by any chance?

Probably the local papers you can join Find My Past for free for 2 weeks as they have the newspaper collection or I could be wrong but possibly National Records of Scotland I think it was there I found records of court proceedings although these aren't online only the index is
