The North Devon Gazette, 22 Jan 1889 carries a lengthy and glowing obituary of Colour Sergeant Joseph Hunt, 4th Foot.

It begins -

A correspondent writes from Canada - "On 3rd October Joseph Hunt died in his 73rd year ..."

It doesn't identify where he died nor includes any mention of wife/wives. Birthplace given as Barnstaple.

FindMyPast has the marriage (transcription)

Joseph Hunt and Christine Bartleman, Edinburgh Parish, 20 Nov 1853, spouse's father William Bartleman.

Fits nicely into the time line!

Check it out on Scotland' People (Free to register and search, credits to view documents).

Will look for presence of 4th Foot in Edinburgh around this time

It's on Scotland's People (Christina Bartleman) - cost £1 50 (6 credits) to view. But the minimum credit purchase is 30 (£7 50)

Good luck

FindMyPast marriages (transcription/image)

Philip Hunt, of the Parish of Mariansleigh and Mary Scott, resident of this Parish (Chulmleigh) married by Banns on 26 April 1807
Philip signed and Mary made her mark

One of the witnesses John Reed (the other signatory appears on several other records - quite usual for someone from the church to perform this function)

Thank you so much for all your help and all you have found, Hanes, much more than I could ever come up with. Even if I am no closer to finding out who Harriet is. Very much appreciated
