That will explain why I could not see William Collinson in 1881 as I was limiting my search to County Durham. Shotley Bridge, as you have pointed out is in Durham, just a few km from Wolsingham where William and his siblings grew up.

I will have to recheck 1881. I thought I saw an age clash with young George and his (supposed) mother Hannah.....

George born in Penrith is not impossible. Nothing surprises me with this family anymore.

There is a death of a George Routledge, age 20, Lanchester 1887. The free search facility on Durham Records Online has his abode as Old Cornsay. William and Hannah Collinson are living in Cornsay village in 1891.

Alan, I've been trying to bring up George Collinson (born 1867 plus or minus a bit) in the 1871 census on the FamilySearch website but I'm getting no results.

Can you link to me the page where it lists George Collinson with his parents William and Hannah in 1871?

Were the children listed on a follow-on page from the parents, and thereby transcribed onto a separate screen record?

...  I'm also having a tough time with the John Collinson (born 1851) who marries Isabella Routledge in 1871. I found the marriage record you quoted but have not succeeded in tracing him back to his birth. GRO revealed a birth in Weardale in 1850 but there's no census record for him in 1851 or 1861 or even 1871, just two months before his wedding.

My grandmother's grandfather, John Collinson, (William's younger brother) was born in 1854 and married Ann Carroll in 1884. Granted, he could have done a lot of things in the decade before he got married at age 30 but to marry Isabella in 1871 would make him 17 at the time; not impossible but stretching things a bit. Along that line, I searched for a death of Isabella Collinson of age consistent with birth circa 1850, without success.

Any advice?

1871, Cornsay,
William Collinson, 23, Coal Miner, place of birth - blank,
Hannah Collinson, wife, 22, b. Durham,
George Collinson, son, age - squiggle, b. Durham
RG10/4958/95/19

Family name transcribed as Collender on Anc.

On 1881 census Hannah and George are both down as being born at Lark House Cottages. Living at Lark House Cottages, Cornsay in 1881 is a Nicholas Routledge aged 62 and family. In previous 1851 - 1871 census he is Nicholas Davison. This matches the Nichol Davison that Isabella Routledge says is her father at her marriage to John Collinson.

What a complicated family. I wonder if George was registered as a Davison.

John Collinson, age 17, is a lodger in the village of Toronto in 1871. About a mile from Hunwick where John Collinson, claiming to be son of James Collinson and aged 20, marries Isabella Routledge later in 1871.

I wonder if the marriage was annulled due to John being underage, as Isabella Routledge appears to marry a John King under her maiden name in 1874.

John and Isabella King are living next door to Nicholas Routledge at Lark House Cottages in 1881.
