Rose Kate Austen married Henry Terry

Hi there,

Is anyone else researching Rose Kate Austen originally from Woodchurch Kent (DOB 1877)? She married Henry Terry in West Ashford in 1901 then moved to Chatham where she had her 3 children Frank, Charley and Lena. She died in Bredhurst in 1963.

I take it that you have seen the 1939 Register entry, which gives Rose's date of birth as 10 February 1877.

Thanks everyone. Yes I have the 1939 entry. That would confirm that the mother's maiden name was not Styles but imagine 2 Rose Kate Austens in the same district in the same year!!!! Talk about having to cross-check and I hadn't got as far as checking GRO so thanks for doing that.

Is anyone researching Rose related to her? I would be interested in comparing DNA matches if they are (and if they have been done of course).

Searching for Rose and her siblings on the GRO website seems to indicate mother's maiden name was Styles. Looking at Louisa Fowle who married Thomas Austen I cannot spot her on the census. However I can see Louisa Styles :

Naomi Styles 5 months

 HO107; Piece: 1620; Folio: 221; Page: 8

Benjamin Stiles married Sarah FOWLE 12 Oct 1847 St Mildred , Tenterden . This would mean that Louisa was born before the marriage. She is registered as Louisa Fowle , with no mother's surname indicating that she was illegitimate: 1845 D Quarter Tenterden vol 5 p 457.

And of course there weren't two Roses there was one... thank you Christine53. I wonder why she went with Styles when registering her childrens' births? I'm not sure why I'm asking that as I have other examples of ancestors doing exactly the same thing and it never crossed my mind
