Family tree
« on: Friday 27 July 18 08:33 BST (UK) »
I have just received my Ancestry DNA results.
It suggests making my private tree public.
How do I do that?
Also, is it advisable? ::)

To make it Public, under the Trees menu at the top, you should find Create & Manage Trees.
On the right hand side, you should see Manage Tree against your own tree.
In the next screen, select Privacy Settings in the area at the top, and tweak your option there.

As to whether it's a Good Idea, it all depends on whether you want all and sundry to see your research. We have several threads here about things such as photos which have been misappropriated from Ancestry trees.

I think the idea is that others can check their DNA link to you without "bothering" you, but I don't have any DNA tests online, so am not certain.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Census information is Crown Copyright. See www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for details.

Kooky, my main tree is private, but I have lots of bits of trees.  I have linked my DNA results to one line in the hope that I would find more information on that branch.  No luck so far on that branch, but I have a huge amount of information about the line where I have an unknown father and have been building that tree to try to work out 'who was a naughty boy' nearly one hundred years ago.  The bits of trees are all public if people wish to search.

Kooky, just think of "all" those new relativies you will have in a few weeks time if you make your tree public. They will be crawling out of the woodwork worldwide in droves.

NOPE

if you make it public  --- then you have lost all privacy rights and some idiot will send your great grandmother to .... gnw.. with 10 other children...

make it accesible to those who are interested enough to send you a request (with good reasons) to view... !!

You do this by checking the status / privacy of your tree and it asks do you want to make it public.. IN MY OPINION. not bloomin likely... the next question is do you want your tree shown in the search engine.. Well then I say yes..
see attached

of course, I may just still be angry that my poor Robert married a 9 yr old Agnes in america in between plowing fields in Leicestershire...

ps   this particular tree I have shown an example of is my BASIC tree it has all the information
BUT NO DOCUMENTS OR PHOTOGRAPHS BAPTISMS ETC.. nothing that I feel is personally mine.

that I have either paid for or searched till the oil burnt out.

then if I get a query -- yes I will open that tree for them..

I have another full private totally private tree that is just there for me to work on and sync to my desk top tree with FTM

sounds as if I am organised.. well guess what ... that fact is slipping daily.. so sad..

I agree Xin, I don't have any photos, certificates etc on any of my trees on Ancestry.

While I was pleased to receive my DNA results, I am frustrated by all the closest matches not having a family tree! :P
