I have checked again and it is Rooks (or at least they both have the same name  )

Hi heywood, thanks for that link.

This afternoon I managed to get on a computer in our local library, which allows us to access Ancestry. On there the images were poor, but William was transcribed at Rooks. The headings said Civil Parish - Lancaster and Hundred - West Derby. Tried to find that with Google but, of course, it kept coming up with Liverpool.
I must admit I struggled to read the original as it was such poor quality.

Hi All

For anyone who still had an interest in this post, today I received a copy of William and Selina's marriage cert. The main point that I found of interest was that they both left their 'mark' as opposed to signing, which to me at least, confirmed that their surnames were passed on by word of mouth such that Rook, Rourke or Rowark would sound the same depending on which part of the country you were in. Hence the confusion of surnames.

I suffer from similar problems with my surname but thankfully am literate. I don’t suppose it mattered much then.
