Carrolls of Ireland
« on: Monday 30 July 18 16:48 BST (UK) »
I have taken most of my family tree back a fair distance but my grandfathers line is going nowhere. I know his name was Thomas Michael Carroll. I found him on the 1939 census in Cardiff so i know his date of birth (unless he got it wrong) was 3rd Jan 1908. My family have told me he was born in Dublin but this could be wrong. I ordered his marriage certificate so know he married Marjorie Nicholls on 7th Oct 1933 in Shirehampton, Bristol and that his fathers name was also Thomas Carroll, general labourer. I have no idea when or why he came over from Ireland. I can't find a birth record or find him in 1911 census. I've also been told he served in the military during WW2 but can find no records there either. It's a complete dead end. I understand there was a fire and records were destroyed so i may never know which is frustrating.

Unlikely any records relating to Thomas were in the fire

Have you been searching for Thomas or Thomas Michael.
It's more likely he will be in records simply as Thomas.
It's quite possible there will be no first name on his birth cert, this was fairly common in Dublin if born in a hospital.

If he served in WWII his records are unlikely to be online and you'd probably need to order them from MOD but the Armed Forces experts here will be able to confirm or correct this.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Not Dublin and not 1908 but there is a Thomas Carroll born 3 Jan 1907 to Thomas Carroll and Johanna Cooke in Limerick reg district. Father is a farmer though.
