Hi folks

I have a putative (although very likely) ancestor Martha SEYWELL, who was born in Fulham on 17 March 1788 and baptised at the Ebenezer Independent Chapel on King Street in Hammersmith on 20 April (coïncidentally my son's birthday), but I'm actually after her parents' marriage. There don't seem to be any marriage records for the place, so does anyone know where else I might look?

Thanks

Martin

baptised at the Ebenezer Independent Chapel on King Street in Hammersmith ... There don't seem to be any marriage records for the place, so does anyone know where else I might look?

There won’t have been any marriages there at that time. Between 1754 and 1837 the only marriages that were legally recognised took place in Anglican churches (with the exception of Quaker and Jewish ceremonies). You will probably need to look further afield.

For example, FamilySearch has a marriage in 1780 in Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, for a William SEWELL and Rachel FORD, which might be worth considering. Just a suggestion.

Martha appears to have a sister...Harriot SEWELL, born 15 Feb 1790, bapt. 21 Mar 1790 at Ebenezer Independant Chapel Hammersmith, d/o William and Rachel.

There are two possible marriages that I can see, the Bucks one may be worth further research.

William Sewell m Rachel Ford 1780 West Wycombe.
There is a William baptised to them in 1786 and an Elizabeth in 1780 (bur. 1785) but no other births that I can see after that date....a possible move to London?

The other one is in Herts but they are baptising children there well after Martha is born.

Thanks for the info, Bookbox. Martha ended up in Wycombe, so that marriage may well indicate long-standing links to south Bucks and be worth looking into. Just to cast the net a bit wider, do you know where I could look to find Quaker and Jewish weddings?

With children baptised in a Protestant Nonconformist chapel, a Quaker or Jewish marriage would be extremely unlikely. I wouldn’t even consider it until I’d exhausted all the Anglican possibilities.
