I haven't read the whole thread, but it might be worth either:

Hoovering the keyboard, tuning the laptop upside down and shaking it, or blasting it with compressed air to check there are no crumbs under the keys.  You might even get a free lunch out of it.

Anyone following this sound advice should ideally shut down the computer first . . . just to be on the safe side
