Grandad Boyd's Navy photo needs date or info

Need help dating is picture of my grandad it’s on thick card and he was in the navy 1915 until 1920 then the merchant navy until 1945 any info on the Boyd family also welcome. His dad was Samuel Boyd and mum Mary he also had a brother Robert James who joined the rifles and stayed in heather street and another brother David and sister Mary

Does he have a first name?
As he's in an RN uniform doesn't that date it?

Sorry his name is Samuel George Boyd born 1896 joined the Royal Navy 1915 I have his navy service card and he serviced on that till 1922 them moved to the merchant navy

Can I narrow down with his stripes he was a second stoker then made a first ?

That’s right mum was Mary and dad Samuel brother was Robert John was was in the rifles

He had an interesting career. I'm surprised he found the time to have his picture taken.

that's probably why he didn't get married to my Gran until 1942

The stripes on his arm are Good Conduct Badges.
At this time the first badge after 3 years and the second badge after 8 years service.

This does not tie in with him serving only 5 years from 1915 to 1920.
