I know, I've been through everything. Very long story! Henry Budd doesn't seem to be registered either. His full name was actually William Henry Budd born in Southampton, father Robert Budd. If I could only establish the married name, I could probably get somewhere.

Which document lists him as William Henry Budd

His son's (my grandfather) marriage certificate and his burial at Elstead in 1891. He died a couple of months after the census of typhoid - was at his in-laws probably in a hope to aid recovery.

No real evidence then that it was his proper name.  :-\

Names on marriage certificates for fathers are often wrong.  Name at death / burial probably supplied by son who gave it on marriage.  On neither of these occasions would anyone have had to provide proof of his name.

True, but similarly have no real proof that it was just Henry!

Just found Charlotte in 1881 with her parents - I see she's a soldier's wife. Soldiering sometimes runs in families, so I wonder if Henry and Alice might be in military birth indexes? (I have no experience of these.)

1881 Census at Elstead, Charlotte Budd is Married, Daughter to Head and a Soldiers Wife

John Legg   Head   M   54   Elstead, Surrey, England
Mary Legg   Wife   F   59   Chert, Surrey, England
George Legg   Son   M   22   Elstead, Surrey, England
Charlotte Budd   Daughter   F   21   Elstead, Surrey, England
Fredrick Legg   Son   M   18   Elstead, Surrey, England
William John Legg   Son   M   14   Elstead, Surrey, England
Leah Legg   Daughter   F   11   Elstead, Surrey, England
Albert Henry Legg   Son   M   8   Elstead, Surrey, England

 ---------

Although civil registration was introduced in 1837, it was not until 1874 that the registration of a birth became compulsory.

His Army records and marriage both show him as just Henry.  He also signed as Henry.

Perhaps he didn't like being called Billy Budd!

I am wondering if Robert bn Liss who is living in Sheffield was Henry's uncle and that Henry was possibly the illegitimate child of one of his sisters.

In 1851 HO107 / 1669 f608 p22 Roberts sisters Martha (c1828) Moore, Elizabeth Budd (c1832) and Laura Budd (c1844) are all together in Southampton.  In 1861 Laura is staying in Halifax Sheffield with Robert & family.

Just going back to this:
Ulysee?
Possible marriage Mar Qtr 1890 in Brighton Joseph Ulysse to Alice Pullen
Ray

1881 census has an Alice Pullen aged 22 in Brighton, born in Dover - RG11/1089 fo54 p16

(I read it as Ulysse, which is what FreeBMD has.)
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson
