miths in the burgh of St. Andrews minute book
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 16:14 BST (UK) »
Hi folks. I'm delving into the history of several of my ancestors who were smiths in the burgh of St. Andrews from the 16th to the 18th century. The Minute Book of their guild helped a lot in this, but what I'm now trying to do is "flesh out" the names with some background detail, and to that end I'm looking at parts of the Minute Book text.

Current target is the oath on admission, which the Book sets out on its first page. This would have been done in the mid-16th century, and as you'd expect it is in Secretary Hand. I've attached an image of the original, and this is what I've been able to decipher so far:

"So help me God and this haly***** and the haly*****
***** and God him self and all that***** maid in***
****and*******and * be my part of *********
********and to the ?reul? and gud to the ********
and men to heir nor se ***** of no bruthir nor
sister of the **************************************
*** ale to keip the reulls and articulie***follow and
at the*** of the dekyne (Deacon) and brethir of the ******
and paine contenit in the said reulls and artikillis"

I'm hoping someone can help me fill in some of the blanks, before my brain explodes....

That is awesome! Thanks for your efforts, I'm absolutely delighted.

A few thoughts;
Does "evangills" mean "angels" or "evangelists"?
"Skayth" = injury or damage
Saint Foy was apparently the patron saint of smiths

Great piece of work, guys, and one which will help me immensely as I work on the remaining couple of hundred pages........

Alan

p.s. it's quite possible that the whole document, when fully transcribed, will be published. If so, I promise to credit anyone who's contributed.

Evangills can mean evangelists or gospels.

 Can you take a look at the second half of line three? It goes "and * be my part of paradiss" - at the position indicated by the asterisk there is a single character, which may or may not stand for something. I can't find anything like it, not so far anyway.

One other thing - in line one, I think it might say ".....God and his haly divin[it]is, if that is a superscript t I see.

I think it is just "divines". I think the mark in the third line represents "and" or, as there is already one I have given it as "als" = also.
