His service number gives an attestation date of 1906.
Squares A10 & A16 on this map.

Recent history was that this whole area was in British hands & had been since the Somme.
During the spring & summer of 1918 the Germans launched Operation Michael & the British lost all they had gained.
This action was part of the British offensive to regain that ground.

There won't be much pre-war but after 4/8/14 the war diaries are the place to look.
What you don't know is when he moved from the 1st. Batt. to the 7th.

The first will give you the details surrounding the Mons Offensive & the withdrawal to the Aisne & the Arne.
This is where these men earned the name "the old contemptibles"

The old contemptibles? What is the meaning of this?

The original BEF consisted of just 390,000 men. They were up against a considerably larger German Army.
When they arrived in France the Keiser referred to them as a contemptible little army.
This was seized upon back home & made good propaganda.
The men wore it like a badge of honour & thereafter were known as the old contemptibles.
The German commanders in the field had a lot more respect.

how do I find out more about Bombera’s in Germany? It's a very rare name with no clear origin. Vinzent was born in Nakel? Which I think is now Poland but was Prussia?
Cory

Hi
when researching in Poland use polish names. Nakel is - Nakło nad Notecią
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakło_nad_Notecią

Herés a link to the Posen project.
http://poznan-project.psnc.pl/index.php?lang=en#prettyPhoto

If you search for Bombera you´ll get 1 hit in Naklo (not yours)

Here are the record scans for Naklo
https://www.genealogiawarchiwach.pl/archiwum-front?locale=en#query.city=Nak%25C5%2582o&query.suggestion=false&query.thumbnails=false&query.facet=true&query.sortMode=DEFAULT&goComments=false&searcher=big&query.query

As far as i can see they range from the end of the 19 century up to approx 1911

There´s quite a lot and not knowing German will not help.

Wow this genealogy is incredibly hard!!
I have found out that Vincent Bombera was born in 1888 in nakel and his wife was zophia. They were buried in Zloto?
