I am trying to find a photo of him ( would the staff considering his position have a photograph of him or a written report of his service )

Regards Phil
Hi

All I know that he was at various prisons across the country at Shelton mallet in the 1911 census he went to Wandsworth prison after

So possible chronology;

Born in Taunton 1862 and lived in the area (married and children born there 1883-1889)

Joined the prison service before 1897 (25 years or more service indicated by ISM in 1922)

The birth certificates of his children would list his occupation. So you could find a date for when he first appears connected to a prison. He could have been at Taunton Prison first)

On the prison staff somewhere in Staffordshire in the 1890s (children appear in Staffordshire 1889-1900. Any idea where his children were born? Is he on the 1891/1901 Census, and what is his occupation?)

Then Hull area (where his wife's death was registered in 1907. Is his occupation on this document?)

Then Shepton Mallet (where he married 1910 and is on 1911 Census - called Chief Warden on the Census)

Then maybe somewhere in Glamorgan (two sons married in Cardiff district 1920-1921. Is their father's occupation listed? - it might say where he lived).

Then Wandsworth in 1922 (Chief Warder on ISM record).
Presumably retired in 1922 as he was 60, and received the ISM medal in that year.

Died in Wandsworth 1947. An obituary might list his occupational history.

If you are looking for a photo, these rough dates of where and when he served will help when looking at staff photos. It will also help when approaching prison records. But if you can give more details that would be great.

Using the information you have from the census, certificates, and any other source you have, can you put on here in a chronological order what you know about Henry John Saunders adult movements? - the dates with where he lived (the town/city if possible, not just the county), and his occupation (as described on the source), and the type of source.  Where his children were baptized, or said to have been born according to the censuses, will give a clue as to where he was living too.

This will help establish which prisons he worked in, and where to look for further details.
