Walter Muirhead 1909 in Liverpool ship owner
« on: Sunday 26 August 18 17:11 BST (UK) »
I have a reference to a Walter Muirhead born in Australia and possibly died in Paris France in  Sept. 1909. His death was a suspected suicide, age 40, retired ship owner, English, living at # 1 Drundley (?) Ave. Liverpool, England. Body pulled from the River Seine.

The age and birthplace fit exactly to "my" Walter Muirhead who was born in Australia in Nov. 1868 to Scottish parents. The father died in 1870 in Australia and the young widow moved back to Scotland with her children. They appear in the 1881 Scottish census in Gorbals, Glasgow. All but Walter are accountable for in later Scottish censuses.

There are no Walter Muirheads in the 1900 Directory for Liverpool nor does he show up in the 1901 English census.

Are there any resources to help me locate Walter Muirhead as a ship owner or resident of Liverpool at that address in 1909?

Suspect the spelling of the road is somewhat suspect

Are you able to scan and post the address from the document so we can have a look at it

"PARIS MYSTERY. BODY OF LIVERPOOL MAN FOUND IN RIVER SEINE. PARIS. September 23rd.
It will be remembered that the body of an Englishman, clothed in evening dress, was taken from the River Seine about a fortnight ago. The identity of the body has just been established. It is declared to be that of a retired Liverpool shipowner,- named Walter Muirhead, who was born in Australia. His address in Liverpool is given as 1 Drundley (?) avenue and his age as 40."

SOURCE- TROVE Newspaper, Australia (online). The Geelong Advertiser, Monday November 1, 1909.

The word "Drundley" is well printed and quite clear. But the original article has the question mark after it.

"PARIS̃

Translation:

"IDENTIFIED. A month ago, it was recovered from the bridge at Almale the corpse of an Englishman. The body has just been recognized at the Morgue. The deceased was Mr Walter Muirhead, 40, born in Australia, a shipowner, residing at 10 Drundley Avenue, Liverpool. It is believed that Mr. Muirhead committed suicide. "

This seems to be the source for the Australian newspaper article on Nov. 1. Street Number is 10 Drundley in Liverpool (not 1). The above online article is a transcription, however.

Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser 25 September 1909:

"A body recovered from the Seine has been identified by relatives, who journeyed to Paris for the purpose, as that of Mr. Walter Muirhead of Liverpool. He left Liverpool for London and it is not known why went to Paris."

Hi,

The nearest address I think it might be is Dingley Avenue, Orrell Park, Liverpool 9.

You can look at the address on old-maps.co.uk by putting in the current post code L9 3AU.

May be nothing, but there is an article in the Liverpool Mail of 8th September 1872, relating to a Margaret Cunningham of Brundley Street and Ann Ross of Dowro Street.

Ann Ross is on the 1871 census at Douro Street but I can't find Margaret or a street of that name. The nearest is probably Brindley Street and, in 1911, No. 1 is an Inn. Could Walter have been staying there?
