Royal Army Medical Corps POW in Far East
« on: Thursday 30 August 18 18:06 BST (UK) »
One of the Commonwealth War Graves in our churchyard is of Pte Frederick Walter Harwood, RAMC, service number 7368923.  He on 24 August 1947, aged 29.  His death certificate (Bedford district) gives the causes as Severe Haematemesis and Two Gastric Ulcers.  I believe he had been a POW in the Far East from 1942 to 1945; and that he had been in 198 Field Ambulance.  Any ideas how I can find more info?

His service record will still be with the Ministry of Defence.  Subject to the conditions you can apply (and pay) for it,  https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records/apply-for-someone-elses-records.

He appears on a list of missing in Malaya dated 15 Feb 1942, later confirmed as POW

There is a war diary for 198 FA up to the time of capture, not digitised.  http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C2737092

This piece on a companion FA mentions 198 FA http://www.roll-of-honour.org.uk/regiments/196_Field_Ambulance/html/history.htm

http://www.fepow-community.org.uk/ may be of help.

Otherwise you might try local newspapers for relatives?  His relatives at the time of death are named here:

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
