Jane Harrold - occupation in the 1841 Census
« on: Friday 31 August 18 11:35 BST (UK) »
I have found a census entry (HO 107 601 3 36) for Jane Harrold aged 15 with an occupation which I read as "Stocking on". It is a very faint entry but I think it the same for her housemate Sarah Hall aged 6. Does anyone know what this might be.

As a matter of interest what is the significance of the single stroke which separates the previous family (also with having a Sarah Hall but aged 70) from Jane and Sarah? I know that a double stroke separates households, but this single stroke seems to separate two young girls from two elderly ladies, one having the same name.

I always thought, but am happy to be corrected, that double stroke indicated the end of a property, and single stroke the end of a houshold within that property.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for putting me straight on the meaning of the single and double strokes. I got it wrong.

Interesting though that two people with the same name, in the same house, albeit very far apart in age, would be considered as separate households.
