Sorry. Should have asked if there are any free online registers for current living people?

Electoral Registers are held by the relevant local authority.
So try the local council, or county council.
May also be available in larger libraries, for their own locality.

There is nothing available on a National basis.

And please remember that they are listed by address; not by names! ;D

Where there is a district and county council in England, it will always be the district council that maintain the registers.  Libraries in particular have to observe privacy restrictions these days, which may mean having to give a reason for wanting the information.

There are commercial sites like 192.com which hold recent electoral registers, but are not "free" except perhaps in the limited sense of allowing a small number of free lookups.  But in that case you don't need the address to search.  And as everyone (I hope) knows, these companies don't have details of those people who have "opted out" of the public register.

Or of course you can try the BT or other telephone directory sites.  That of course would only give one name, if any, for any household.
Rutter, Sampson, Swinerd, Head, Redman in Kent.  Others in Cheshire, Manchester, Glos/War/Worcs.

I was searching for a name and the area in which this person lives. My father is researching a family tree for a family friend and they 'by one means to another' was separated years ago and would like to find and contact them again.

I have now found this person using Genes Reunited at a cost of £4.99 - other sites were charging almost £20. It was a different County I was looking for so use of local library was no good for me.

Thank you to all for your help.

County Durham Electoral Registers were filmed and a copy was/is in the Genealogy Library in Salt Lake City. Old technology. Most of what I (2018) see is on ancestry.com.

Eligible voters have the right to opt out of the registers that may appear online and have been able to since 2002.

As the years move forward from 2002, the information freely available or with one of the many subscription services becomes out of date.
