Thanks for the great replies everyone and the lovely restoration! All very useful :). Based on the 1880s dating, I'm making the educated guess that the people pictured are my great-great grandparents, which is exciting!

Glad you like the restoration. Hope to help you again in the future.
I just like to do photo restores.

My guess would be 1880s as suggested by Gadget but not sure what part of the decade as we can't be sure of how fashionable she was.
I think the child is a girl
I think the dress in Gadgets link  looks about right.

Thanks everyone. I'm guessing (on an educated basis) that the people pictured are the parents of the woman shown below - I can see a definite likeness. What do others think?

The woman pictured was born 1888. I don't think she's the baby in the photo, though. If the baby is who I think she is, she was born in 1886 (the older sister of the woman pictured).

No, Emma (b. 1886) was their first child. I think the photo could reasonably be later than the fashions might suggest. The people in question came from a very rural area, and I doubt they would have kept up to date with the fashions.

The reason  I ask is that if it was the 1886 daughter and she would be about  say 12 -18 months,  the mother is  likely to be pregnant with the second daughter, which puts a stop date on the photo.
I'm still  not convinced that it's taken 1887-1888 though.

Agree with the 1880's date. This style of skirt was as Gadget said popular early-mid decade.
Looking at the pleating you can see it's quite dishevelled so it's been worn for some time & there's a possibility she may not have been the original owner so I can't see any reason why this couldn't have been taken 1886-7.
The next 2 are 1890's & the last mid-late Edwardian.
