UK Soldiers died in the Great War
« on: Sunday 07 October 18 17:01 BST (UK) »
I know that transcriptions are available via Ancestry and FindMyPast - BUT where can one see the original entries or images of the original entries?

Related thread  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=801594.msg6593737#msg6593737

The anomaly is that Walter Fletcher appears on the Hockley, ESSEX memorial, but was born in Hockley, WARWICKSHIRE.  Joined the Northumberland Fusiliers in Wolverhampton, married in Bakewell, Derbyshire.  :-\ :-\  Just trying to help the OP of the other thread - ugo

Unfortunately no information via CWGC, other than date of death and cemetery.  In theory the UK site gives a location of Essex - just want to confirm the original entry as to whether Essex or Warwickshire.

There can be confusions or actually not. My grandfathers sister had two sons killed in the Great War. Basically our family was Forest of Dean, Glos. Father moved in his company appointments and when they joined up they were living in Newport, Shropshire. Yet one was in N. Staffs. Regt. and the other in S. Staffs. Regt. Family back in Lydney, Glos. 1914 or 1915. Both sons are on Lydney war memorial and the younger one is on the Newport, Shropshire one too. The older one may be too, I don't know.

Yes, confusion is the "word".  I was hoping that it wasn't a case of E before W (Essex before Warwickshire) and that the original entry might solve it!

The anomaly arises from calling it Hockley Warwickshire instead of Hockley B'ham.
There's a Hockley Heath in Warks. which is of course a different place.
I think at some point someone's realised there isn't a Hockley Warks. & made the assumption that it must be Hockley Essex.
We all know what assume does.

The original can apparently be seen at the Imperial War Museum.  The National Archives appear to have only links to other archives for some parts of it.

However, when clearly there has been some mistake, it would not be beyond the bounds of possibility that SDGW is itself in error - does happen!

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

SDGW was originally a War Office publication.  It's available on CD but it was very expensive.  When I started doing my war memorial research SDGW wasn't on Ancestry, and I relied on people kindly doing look-ups for me.  You might try asking on the Great War Forum, as there were some members there who had it, or had access to it.

And yes, it does contain errors.  I see there's an updated version with some corrections.
