Chelsea Barracks
« on: Monday 15 August 05 18:38 BST (UK) »
If anyone has access to Parish REcords that cover the Chelsea Barracks I would be grateful for a lookup of John STANLEY b. 1865/1866 (According to 1901 Census)

Thanks

HI
2 things,
1 - there is a list of Stanleys found in various census from all over England on my website - just click on the web link under my details.
2. - this one is off my non-published data base of Stanleys
1921   John   discharge  Chatham   discharge   misconduct       Reg No 1849494 Corps. Royal Engineers aged 26
but that is the only info I have - so no idea if yours or not.
Cheers Cougar

Hi Adi

You can see where Chelsea Barracks is on this 1862 map, select Chelsea Bridge Road and it's easy to find.  You'll also notice quite a few churches in that area  ???  You can also Google genuki chelsea to find out which churches are in the Chelsea area.  One way you can consult the parish records is ordering them for viewing at your local LDS Centre which you can find out here http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp  Might be easier ordering the birth cert though ...

I did look on the 1901 and it says Chelsea, not Chelsea Barracks - but assume you know otherwise.

Good luck
Jonathan

Johnathan

Its all speculation at the moment based upon vauge family rumor that his father may also have been in the army.

What has made it strage is I cannot find any GRO index reference for the birth....my fear is he may have been born in Chelsea barracks and his father transffered to another barracks before they registered the birth...meaning he could be any one of the John Stanley's on the index.

I am giving Westminster Regitrar a try, as they cover the Barracks and also Chelsea.

Thanks
Adrian

Adrian, I assume this is the one?

John Stanley
Birth:  About 1866   Chelsea, London
Death:  25 MAY 1929
Father:  John Stanley
Marriages: Fanny Godden
02 MAY 1895   Folkestone, Kent

If so, still not much help as it has been entered in someone's gedcom and been uploaded to the IGI as they have no reference numbers for it.

Yes that's the one.

The 1901 Census has John being born Chelsea, which I assume is where they get the birth date.  But have not been able to locate any birth record for him.

Sue,

The 1881 Census / Colchester is a big maybe. The only issue is the age.

He joind the East Lancs Regiment aged 19 - but do not know where.
He was stationed at Shorncliffe Barracks, Folkestone from around 1893 - 1895 (maybe a bit earlier).

His marriage cert states father as John Stanley - Occp. Baker  (we think this may have been in the army)

What I cannot get around is the fact that he joined the East Lancs regiment....if he and his father were born in London !!!!
