Sarah Thatcher married William Gorringe on 5th November 1804 in Glynde
« on: Thursday 22 December 05 00:07 GMT (UK) »
:) Hi,

Am desperately seeking any information on a Sarah Thatcher who married William Gorringe in Glynde on 5th November 1804. I would love to know where William Gorringe originated from, where Sarah was born, and whether the couple had any children, and where! Why so many questions  .........  I expect you have heard that said before!

Any info or directional guidance gratefully received.

Many thanks,

Carol

Hi
The Sussex Marriage Index just says "both of this parish"   and Banns.   No further details.   You will need to check the Glynde parish registers to see if you can find suitable baptisms for them and their children.

Glynde baptisms (1813-1840) are included on the FFHS pay-per-view site

http://www.familyhistoryonline.net/database/SFHGBaptisms.shtml

It's a generally inexpensive way to view records but you have to pay a minimum of £5 and it's valid for 6 months I think.

Hi there

They may still be around in 1841 - any suitable Gorringes on the census?

Have just checked the 1841 for Glynde where there was only 1 family of Gorringe listed

Elizabeth Gorringe, 54; with Elizabeth, 17 and Alfred aged 11.

The Elizabeth GORRINGE, widow, in the Glynde 1841, 1851 & 1861 censuses is the widow of Thomas GORRINGE who with his wife Elizabeth and children Frances (9), Harriett (7), William (5) and Grace (4) was removed from Ringmer to Glynde by an 11 Nov 1815 order, confirmed after appeal on 12 Jan 1816 [ESRO/Par.461/32/2/81 & 89]. This family lived in a cottage on Moor Lane, Glynde (just south of the Ringmer parish boundary) that still exists and was at that time the cottage of the gamekeeper - huntsman of the Glynde estate.

He is identified by the 31 Jan 1829 will of his father, William GORRINGE of Ringmer, lab, [ESRO/SM/D12-407] as his son Thomas GORRINGE of Glynde, husbandman. Thomas was bapt at Ringmer 12 Oct 1783, the 7th of 8 children of William GORRINGE (detailed ancestry and obituary available) and his wife Fanny (nee FINCH), who was the daughter of a Ringmer blacksmith and parish clerk, who also has a long ancestry.

The eldest son of this family, bapt at Ringmer 30 Oct 1767 (6 months after his parents' marriage) was a William GORRINGE. I have assumed he is the William GORRINGE who with a wife Hannah had a son William bapt at Ringmer 20 May 1792, prior to Hannah's burial at Ringmer 27 Dec 1792.

A William GORRINGE with a wife Sarah and children William (5), Hannah (4) and Mary Ann (2) was deported back to Ringmer from St Mary in the Castle, Hastings, on 20 Jan 1823, I have assumed this is the William born in 1792.

In addition to the above

William GORRINGE and his wife Hannah were removed from East Grinstead back to Ringmer on 4 Jul 1791 [ESRO/Par.461/32/3].

The 1829 will of his father William GORRINGE of Ringmer, lab, leaves bequests to the two sons and a daughter of his deceased son William, so this William must have had two additional children after the death of his first wife Hannah.

The Sussex Marriage Index just says "both of this parish"   and Banns.   No further details.

This is true as far as William's SMI record goes; but Sarah's names the witnesses - William WISDOM & Samuel HUBBARD.

It's always worth checking both bride and groom records on the SMI.

This post has been resurrected from 2005 for some reason so we are talking 6 years ago here.  I have realised that now!   Unfortunately carolp has not been online for well over a year so may not see the fresh information.
