Help tracing relatives of John Peter McCreesh
« on: Monday 27 March 06 17:27 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find any relatives of my  2xG.Grandfather, he was John Peter McCreesh, bd about 1828, in Ireland, I don't know anymore than that about his family.  He went to England and married Elizabeth Hurst in Wigan in circa 1850, he shows up on the 1851 census living in Wigan, with his wife and baby daughter  Ellen.  He had 9 children one being my G.Grandfather James Henry McCreesh.  John Peter died about 1877 in Lancashire.

If anyone has any information or ideas on how to trace his roots I would appreciate it.  We believe his occupation to have been an architect and land surveyer.

Hello ev2210,

What denomination was your 2xGreat Grandfather?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

I've linked your John Peter McCreesh bd circa 1826 thread to this one.

McCreesh is very much a name associated with South Armagh.
124 of the 139 marriages listed at www.emeraldancestors.com are in Armagh.
Castleblayney which is just over the Northern Ireland border with the Republic of Ireland has the highest density of McCreesh's, so I would suggest that would be the most likely origin of your ancestor.
Sorry I cant help more than that.
