Parish marriage record - Is that it ???
« on: Tuesday 13 June 06 05:28 BST (UK) »
I've just received a marriage registration ordered on 'scotlandpeople' for 1816.
It is an extract of entry in the Dumfries old parochial register - and is just the bride and groom's name and the date - which I already knew from the site anyway.

I have been reading about how wonderfully detailed Scottish records are and was expecting far more detail from the original.

I feel totally dudded and am so glad I did not order anything else [from Aus mind you with exchange rate added in.

Is this marrige too early to expect any more information - or - is there another set of registrations - civil for instance?

Hi Joy,

Sorry to hear of your disappointment.  The detailed Scottish records which you read about refer to the births, marriages and deaths which took place from 1855 onward when civil registration began.  I'm afraid that your experience is typical of the entries in the parish registers.  Sometimes, in large towns/cities, in the case of a marriage, the names of the bride's parents is given.

Hi penshurst,

If you have a gander at this thread..
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,24468.0.html

It lets you know what to expect.

Sorry you have been disappointed but parish records are very variable - some are really bare - Dumfries being some of the barest.

There is a BIG difference in "Parish Records" and "Statutory Registration" - always be sure what date you are looking at this will determine what is available.
