1841/1851 SPEED
« on: Sunday 02 July 06 23:35 BST (UK) »
Could some kind soul do a look up in the 1841/1851 and possibly later censuses, to track a John SPEED.
He would probably 3 or 4 years in 1841. I think his father is William, but I don't know the rest of the family. I have him in the area of East Ferry/ Owston Ferry I think.
Any help regarding the SPEEDs in this area would be of great help.
Thank you
Gill

Thanks for that Geoff.
Would an ag Labourer have 3 servants or would they just be lodging there?

Thanks for that Geoff.

No way of telling - they were all M(ale) S(ervants) under 20, not AgLabs.

Was this the family in 1851?

Great Grimsby
William SPEED 39 AgLab, Yorkshire
Mary 44 Lincs Hepworth (Epworth?)
Eliza 15 Assistant, Belton in Isle (of Axholme?)
John 13 Work in foundry, Newington Xxxx?
Anna 12 Sunday School, Ditto
Sarah 11 Sunday School, Lincs
William 10 Sunday School, Lincs
Henry 4 Lincs
Mary El'th 2 Grimsby

No idea where Eliza came from, but others match pretty well.

IGI has
1832 Mary Ann
1834 John
1837 John James
1839 Henry
baptised in Newark ... could it be them?

An entry on IGI suggests William SPEED (1841-1924) Lincs, son of Wm SPEED and Mary TURNER

Thanks so much for that.
Gives me somewhere else to go. I just have John Speed's father on his marriage certificate :- William Speed, Labourer, But obviously that doesn't give where born or even where he was living. The marriage was in Sculcoates, Hull, but William wasn't one of the witnesses. I got the information where and when John was born from the 1861 census, but as it gives place of birth as Ferry, Lincs, it wasn't a great help. Checking a later census won't help as his wife was remarried by the 1871, so assumed he had died by then.

It'll keep me busy!!

Thanks again, Gill

John 13 Work in foundry, Newington Xxxx?

The Ancestry transcription is

Newington Surrey and, I must admit, it looks rather like that on the image.  Of course what is on the image is itself a transcription.  Perhaps it once said Owston Ferry  ::)
_________________________________________________________________

I've found this lot in Newark in 1841
William SPEED 30 Gardener
Maria 30
Richard 11
Mary 9
John 4
Henry 2
All born Notts

Perhaps the IGI entries relate to that lot.
_______________________________________________________________________

Eliza(beth) SPEED now found with TURNER grandparents

1841
Epworth
John TURNER 70 AgLab
Hannah 70
Elizabeth 40
Elizabeth SPEED 5

The discovery of Elizabeth makes me think that the 1851 family that I found was correct.

The IGI only has one Wm SPEED 1807-1817 Yorks - bap about 10 miles from Epworth.  The parents' names (Wm and Sarah) are used by your Wm SPEED for his children, but these were common enough names of course.
