I am trying to trace a Birth Certificate for my Grandfather, William James Selwood. His Marriage Certificate in 1918 shows his age as being 29, whereas his Death Certificate in 1959 shows his age as being 72. This indicates his Date of Birth as being somewhere between 1886 and 1889. His Marriage Certificate shows his Father, also named William James Selwood, as being deceased as the time but having been a Petty Officer in the Royal Navy. The family believe my Grandfather may have come from the Gloucestershire area.
Armed with this information, and allowing a few years either side, I found 15 William Selwood's aged between 8 and 18 in the 1901 Census. I eliminated 12 of these because they either had the wrong middle name or the Father's name was incorrect. The 3 I am left with all were known in 1901 as William Selwood. Of these 1 was aged 8 and therefore would not appear on an earlier Census, the Other 2 were aged 10 in 1901 and therefore may appear in 1891. The one I am most interested in has roots in Gloucestershire and I attach a copy of his 1901 Census Record.
Any advice or information you can provide would be much appreciated.
