Hello Gadget - I am most grateful for your reply regarding the marriage of David Roberts -  I am even more in your debt because you have solved the problem - many many thanks.
As you know when one answers a gap in your records it often leads to further questions and I now need to find the birth of both parties - if you have access to birth records for Llanuwchllyn from 1762 to 1808 please let me know. Again many thanks to you and well done RootsChat.
Diolch yn fawr - John Ashley.

PS I can go back to 1668, if you like :D

Hello again - gosh that was quick !! Taking my cue from the census of 1851 the names and dates of birth or baptism I now require are as follows :
Hugh Roberts circa 1762 at Llanuwchllyn.
David Roberts circa 1807 - son of above - again at Llanuwchllyn.
Ann Hughes circa 1803 at Llanuwchllyn.
Many thanks - your further assistance will be appreciated.   John.

Hi John

Having a bit of difficulty with your baptisms. So far, the only Hugh that is anything like is

31 Oct 1762 s/o Robert Jones and Grace

The registers go between patronymic and surname like no one's business at that stage - it depended on how the clerk/vicar decided to enter them.

I'll check in the neighbouring parishes later. Think I'll be going out in my jeans  :o

Hi John

I've had a really good look.

The only other Hugh Robert(s) apart from the one above is

Llanuwchllyn 29 October 1759 s/o Robert Thomas (again semi-patronymic) and Jane.

Entries for 1806 are missing, so David possibly there   :(

No sign of Ann  :( :(

Were they non-conformists at any time? There was a big upsurge in Methodism in the Penllyn parishes around that time  ???

Hello gadget - I am again in your debt and your assistance has enabled much progress - Megan and I are both originally from North wales - Your answer regarding the birth of Hugh is very enlightening and I am confident that it is the right family - whilst this business of patronymics is most confusing -
we must persue this frustrating search for our ancestors.   Many thanks.  John.
