Quebec Look Up
« on: Monday 25 September 06 09:52 BST (UK) »
Hi can anyone find this lady for me?

Harriet Buckley born 1811 Quebec Canada ( Mother will be Margaret Buckley born 1791 Portsmouth Hampshire UK).

The mothers surname could be any variation on Buckley as it is very hard to read on the census transcripts.

Do you know where in Quebec? And also the denomination of the family is important, because there are no civil records, so you need to find the baptism.

http://simmons.b2b2c.ca/attach1.htm - there's a good overview here.
http://www.daviesgenealogy.com/QuebecResearch.htm - and another.

There are some things online if you know the area, and also check Quebec Genweb because they have church lookups - mostly Catholic, I think:

Thats all I have!

Her Mother appears with her in 1851 and says born hampshire UK.

Harriet usually says born Quebec or North America.

There are very few parish records for Harriets children online on the IGI as Devon has either lost records due to WW2 or they have not been transcribed.

So finding their religion may be an impossibility.

So it's not a family who emigrated to Canada and stayed there, it's someone who was born there but her family came back? Do you know who Harriet's father was? It's beginning to sound like a military family, which changes things again.

There's a possiblity she'll show up in the overseas indexes if her father was in the army - although they don't seem to cover everyone for that early, it's all a bit hit and miss.

Her father appears to be deceased by 1841 as Mother is living alone

1851 mother staying with Harriet listed as Mother in law.

Hence how I knew she was a possible Buckley as there is no marriage for her on IGI

A lot of the family are from Plymouth or Stonehouse ( East Stonehouse) so possibly Navy.

Okay, so:

Was Harriet married by 1841? To who? If you're lucky enough that she was married after civil registration then that would give you her father's name and occupation.  If they were in Plymouth area then that does suggest possibly Navy (or Merchant Navy).

http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/publications.htm#Indexes - possibly you may be able to get some information from these indexes.

http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/surnames.htm - indicates how many times Buckley shows up in the indexes.

My suggestion then is that you ask them for a transcript of Buckleys, marriages 1754 - 1812 and 1813 - 1837, baptisms 1813 - 1839, and both sets of burial indexes, total people: 83

And Griffiths, perhaps just the baptisms 1813-1839, of which there are 65.

By email transcripts cost a penny an entry - actually looks like they put a minimum of £3 so you could throw in Griffiths burials etc.

What you are looking for is:
A marriage of ? Buckley to Margaret
Children of ? Buckley and Margaret, who might be younger siblings of Harriet
Death of either Margaret or her husband.
Baptisms of Harriet's children with Thomas.

What was Thomas Griffith's occupation?

Also, I think this may be Margaret's death:
Margaret Buckley, Dec 1857 quarter, E. Stonehouse, Vol 5b page 194.

http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/deaths.htm#COL6 - Clara Dixon's site suggests that it was indeed usual for women to be listed as 'wife of' or 'widow of' on their death certificates, so this may be a way of finding Harriet's father's name.
