? Born in Scotland ?
« on: Thursday 02 November 06 14:21 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find the birth of three people who are supposed to be born in ?Edinburgh  Scotland.
Mary born c1817, David c1818 and William c1824.
The parents are Anthony Fouchard (French Teacher) and Jacobina Tephin (father James) married at St Cuthberts 7 May 1813. This is in the IGI and Scotlands People.
Have found the first child  Erzilie (Rose Ella/Rosalie) b5 Feb 1816 Ediburgh in the IGI. On the original copy of a LDS film of St Cuthberts it reads :- A Fouchard French Teacher and Jamimia Taffen his spouse High Church parish a daughter born 5th current,  name Erzilie  baptized by Mr ?Clegharer.
I have tried Scotlands People births 1800 to 1840 soundex on but nothing there, not even Erzilie.
Also tried Tephin 1700 to 1800 soundex on but no luck.
The family was in Liverpool by 1826 as Jemima the last child was born there abt 1826 (from 1841 census).
Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated.
Regards
EddieW  :)

Have you considered that they may have been born in England after all? I had a similar situation where the census said b. in Scotland, but the child had in fact been born after the family moved south.
It's worth thinking about what other handwritten letters the initial "T" of the wife's surname could have resembled as another possibility is that it may have been misread and indexed as something else; J, I, or even F, for example.

Hi Eddie

It may also be that, sadly, the relevant OPRs for the births/christenings that you seek have not survived over the years (lost/destroyed) and you will not find verification of their details on the Scottish OPRs.  Have you managed to track the children in the English censuses, do they consistently show Scotland as birth place? If so, then this may be all that you will be able to have as 'proof' of their Scottish births.  :'(

Regards.

Thanks for the reply and help Isabel and Monica,

Pretty sure they were born in Scotland as from a newspaper article i received after posting this  Anthony was a French teacher at Dumfries Academy in 1824/26 (posted on a later date) and now his last child Jemima who was listed as born in Liverpool about 1826 i think  may have been born in Scotland.

Have tried several first letter spellings, even Bouchard allowing for a foreign accent when registered. Fouchard has bean transcribed as Touchard a few times.

Have the family on the English census most years and always Scotland and have marriages and deaths etc.

The marriage of Anthony and Jacobina is on S/P but with a name like Ta(e)phin she could also be a foreigner.

The really puzzling part is if Ersilie (Roselie) is on a LDS film from St Cuthberts, Edinburgh why isn't she in Scotlands People even if the others have got lost.

We live in hope that something will turn up eventually, brick walls have fallen before.

Thanks again,
Cheers,
EddieW  :)

PLease note there is a duplicate thread here though refering to Anthony's time in Dumfriesshire.  I have posted census info - wasn't aware you already had it.

EddieW,

Have you contacted this researcher in Australia?

They may have found information on this line?

Always worth a shot?
