Baptism Locations
« on: Friday 10 November 06 21:13 GMT (UK) »
A number of webites give dates of baptisms but how do we find where the service was conducted.
Do the numbers given for Batch Source or Print No help or is there any other way?

Thanks

Hi,

General rule of thumb for the IGI (family search) provided the entries are NOT member submitted but extracted records.  If it doesn`t state the actual church then it is normally the Parish Church for that particular town/Parish.  Any other churches for the same town/parish are named.

However, occasionally  other records are on the same film.  To be certain, when you have accessed the record make a note of the Source number and then go the the Family History Library Catalog.  Click on Film/fiche search and type in the Source number.  If you click on the entry it should bring up what is included on the film.

Hope I haven`t missed anything out.

Regards,
Mo

I agree ... many (but not all) submitted entries are fanciful guesses based on assumptions that a couple married a year before the birth of the first known child (and the groom was age 25, the bride 20 in that assumed year).

I saw today an alleged marriage which was said to have taken place in 1810, but the parish did not exist until 1889!

There is no necessity to go to the family history catalogue when you have a film no reference on an IGI extracted record - simply click on the number in situ & it will take you directly to the appropriate film reference. Some films (usually for small parishes) contain multiple parishes but it is usually simple to know which is the correct one based on the description on the IGI record.

If you are talking of sites other than the IGI, whether the parish is given or not depends on the person who has created the online data.

Submitted IGI records are usually more accurate if they contain an actual date (not about, cica or just a year). An actual date often indicates a parish register has been sighted.

Genuki ( http://www.genuki.org.uk ) has very good parish lists for most counties, so you can check for the existence of a specific church.
