Maidstone Parish record
« on: Friday 05 January 07 13:24 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone please look at the Maidstone Parish records  for families with the surname Cockerton residing in Maidstone 1810 - 1820. Particularlty interested in baptisms

Father George Cockerton Journeyman/ papermaker born Maidstone abt 1783.
Mother Sarah born Nov 1782 Broughton, Oxford.
George & Sarah married at Broughton, Oxford in 1803.
Can anyone find any children baptised to this family born in Maidstone between 1809 - 1820

Here is some information that may relate to the above people.
The family may have moved to Somerset in later years.
In 1841 Portway Cuthbert, st Wells they have a son Levi with them aged 15yrs born abt 1826 not in Someset (not sure of his birth name, cannot find him on IGI).
Following Sarah's death in1842 George may have re married a Racheal Brown in 1842 at Wells, Somerset.

On the 1861 census a Widower George Cockerton is residing at
9 Salem St, Maidstone. Occupation Carpenter aged 81yrs. Living as a boarder with the Coomber family. (not sure if same George iasm looking for).

There is a George Cockerton death Mar 1862 in Maidstone would there be any parish records for this death/ burial but not sure if it is the same George I am looking for.

thank you for any assistance.

Hi Teresa
what you see on the I.G.I on-line is a copy from the Fitch itself. So you will only see the same thing.I actually checked the fiche myself today at the library. To see why there was two henry's born 12 years apart c in the same place with same named Parents. It Doesn't give more than you can already see though. The only difference is that one mother is just Sarah the other is Sarah Turner,i think they may be different parents or why would she decide to add turner, and c the same child years later.  I also checked the on line entry for the George born Oxford, against the Fitch in the county of oxford. The only reason you need to check on the original Fitch is when it is submitted "no source given" that means it is not a Mormon entry. Other than that they were copied as you see on the I.G.I. I am glad you will get a Fitch(have you got a Fitch reader ???)it will give you a better understanding of what it is.A lot of folk seem to think it is like census and gives address's occupations and the suchlike.Just think if they did we wouldn't need a census would we ;D

Celia, I am relatively new to this hobby. Thanks for the information of what I will find on LDS microfiche. I ordered the microfiches a few weeks ago and did hope to find some new information.

I have been looking for a Charles Cockerton born 1815 Maidstone with father named George Cockerton. I thought Henry may be related or even Charles if he didn't use the name Henry in later life.

i just had a shock :o till i saw the birth date ;D,I was looking up a surename R for someone that could be mistranscribe into at leased four names. So as is often advised i put four **** for the last letters.Probably no connection to you but it does prove that the name Levi is a name. This came up in the short list of mixed strange names ;)

Hello Teresa,
This may be of interest to you even if not linked to your family.
There was a Taylor and Costumier 's business here in Sittingbourne Kent from Circa 1890's until 1929 run by the following :-
               Henry Cockerton  1878-1929 (Master Taylor)
                 at        110 High Street

Rose Cockerton (nee Lindridge)1874-1942 his Wife.
               Hilda Cockerton  1908-1974 their daughter.

Henry came from Little Mapleston Essex.and Rose was local in Sittingbourne .She was a daughter of the family Henry lodged with prior to their marriage. They are all buried in the local Cemetery.
                                                          Regards Rog.
