Matching marriage index name & birth records, illegible writing puzzle
« on: Monday 12 February 07 06:24 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to establish the maiden name of a woman who was born in Misterton Nott. 1855ish.

According to 1881 census there is in Lincoln an Alfred Geo WEBSTER aged 28 and his wife is said to be  Eva Rebecca Webster aged 26 with her birth place given as Misterton, Nottingham. There is a 7 month old dau. Cicely in the house. I am interested in the maiden name of the wife.

When I go to the freebmd to see marriages for this couple there is in Sept Q 1879 a marriage that fits- Gainborough 7a 1041-
 Alfred George Webster and a
CONINGHAM Em Rabecca,
 CONINGHAM Em Rebecca ,
CORRINGHAM Em R.

One concludes from the three entries the surname is close to illegible and three transcribers have had a go at it, bless them.

So I went to the freebmd birth records for Nottingham 1854-1856 thinking I might find the woman's birth there. I  put in the various surnames above as well as Cuningham, and but noreults at all came up- "Sorry, no person found" or whatever it is  freebmd politely tells one.

Has anyone any ideas how to resolve this please?  This is not my family- I'm doing a search  to help a newbie starting off in family history and it would be wonderful to be able give her the name of her greatgrandmother, courtesy of rootschat.

Any help/ ideas/suggestions very welcome- and thanks,
charlotte

Hi Charlotte

I find it interesting that over the years the BDM indexes for England/Wales appear to have been re-transcribed and are often typed. When going to the ancestry images for the marriage you are looking at, the image is in fact typed. The details is given as
Em Rebecca Coningham  Gainsbro'  7a 1041
You can check at
http://content.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=8965&offerid=0%3a7858%3a0

This could be verified by buying the certificate - the index may be in error - the certificate may be easier to read. It may also include age at marriage.

1854-1856 births are not complete on FreeBDM so you could search the full index at ancestry to check for a birth.
http://content.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=8964&offerid=0%3a7858%3a0

Sometimes you can get a more accurate birth date from earlier census records (when a child), so finding the lass in 1861 may also help to pinpoint the birth. I will see if I can find anything

In 1871, Eva is away at school  - Grantham Lincolnshire
Eva Corringham aged 16 also Minna Corringham aged 10
RG10/3358  32/2  No name - could be a Dame school - 4 teachers and about a dozen students.

There is a birth on FreeBDM

Corringham  Rebecca    Gainsbro'  7a 578   Dec 1854 which seems to be the correct district & is probably your lass.

Thank you Trish and jane for all that help.
I've printed it all off and will snail mail it so that it can be entered into the newly installed data base.
It is great progress and a great encouragemnt to someone stafting out in gen.
Thank you again from us both,
charlotte

Dear Charlotte,

Ref this post you did back in 2007 , you mentioned you was asking for this information on behalf of a friend who was trying to get hold of her great grandmother.

I am trying to find this person you was doing it on behalf of , as I am trying to find decendents of the Corringham Family and this person could be the key to something very interesting.

I would really aprichitate if you could givem me more information on your friend, and if there is anyway of contacting her even if it's through this forum.

Regards Gareth
