Nearest cemetry in Luton?
« on: Thursday 19 April 07 06:12 BST (UK) »
I am researching the Stott family whose mother Helen Stott passed away in Luton at the end of 1897.  The last known address on the 1891 census was 3 Crescent Road.  What would be the nearest cemetrys?  Would Kelly's directory hold any information on this family?  Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,

Bedfordshire Archives have Luton Cemetery burial records that covers the years you want.

Send them (via contact us link) an email & see if they can assist

As you'll see, there are 2 cemetaries in Luton, Rothsay Road & Crawley Green Road

You are all awesome.  Thank you for the new information.  I'm hoping to eventually track down living relatives of the family i.e. Montague, James etc who didn't come to New Zealand.  I wonder if there are any Stotts still living in Luton!

I got a reply from the Bedfordshire Archivist .. she is still a mystery in some instances ... Helen died on 16 December 1897.  She lived for the past 3 years with her son James at 3 Crescent Road, Luton.  However, Helen ISN'T buried in those two nearest cemeteries and they don't have a record as to where she is buried!!  Oh no!  I think one of her daughters died the same year or very near her but can't find my notes regarding this .. I guess she could have been taken back to St Albans where her husband Ralph was buried many years earlier ... does anyone know the distance between Luton and St Albans?  Thanks again everyone

I guess you must have her death certificate ?  freeBMD index is Luton RD vol 3b page 270 Dec 1897 - age at death 68. What address is shown ?

St Albans is about 10 miles south-east of Luton
