This is a very good idea Julie - I for one would be more than happy to take photographs for someone if the need arose.

Last year we took my mum to see the various houses she had known her grandparents to live, but forgot to take the camera!  :-\

Hi All,

Quote from: A few
If a board was set up we could add posts such as....

Sorry, but this won't be possible for now.
As you all know, every  now and then, RootsChat 'goes slow' (and everyone gets withdrawal symptoms  ;D ).

The more boards we have, the worse the performance.

But there is nothing to stop you all carrying on as before, with topics on the relevant county board, either asking for, or offering photos and descriptions.

As has already been said above, there has been lots of help offered and received with such topics.

regards,
Bob

What a good idea!  ;D

Could we not have a table (similar to the surname interets table) by town/county or board where we could post the areas we could get to and then individual rootchatters could contact us via Personal Message if they wanted a picture/map or whatever?

e.g If we had a norfolk table, I could put down that I was available to take pictures etc in Norwich (term time) and then if someone wanted a pic of a house, they could PM me and take it frm there.

Therefore not taking up too much webspace

Hi Liverpool Lass,Liz,Wheeldon,Cheshire Mog,Pels,Freddiebean,Bob and Acceber (if I've missed anyone blame it on global warming that's my excuse when I forget anything these days ;D)

Many thanks guys for sharing an interest, I can see Bob's point that you do have a lot of topic boards on the go already and I'll probably find out someone else had the same idea a few years ago but with so many boards on the go it is very hard to read all the posts as you know, I've only just got round to visiting the surname section for the first time today so I know how hard it is to keep up with things and I can appreciate you don't want the boards slowing down with extra topics

Bob are we ok if we use the ordinary county section boards, I thought you could only use these regarding census and bmd look up requests and info?

If anyone needs info around Harrogate town centre area I can help during term time, I'm a Leeds lass at heart only been here 10 years, so don't know the outlying areas well and I don't drive, but if I can help anyone just let me know and I'll do what I can.

I was given a large collection of old Harrogate postcards on cd last year that belonged to my brother in law's friend and she would be happy about me using them to help others, they are over 100 years old and she owns them so there shouldn't be any copyright issues should there?

Thanks for replying guys, and any moderators reading this any help and info will always be appreciated, it's the first time I've done anything like this and I don't want to tread on anyone's toes.

Off to round up my bunch school tomorrow (for them not me ;D)

Yours Julie

Hi Julie, and everyone else.

RootsChat as a whole is dedicated to finding out information about our ancestors.

Because Census and BMD info are 'facts' (with the usual disclaimers because of transcription error, and knowingly or unknowingly falsifying information, etc  ;D ) this is usually the first thing most people ask.
And for those who just 'collect names', then this is probably the only things they will ask.

But read the boards carefully; you will see that for most of us, it is not just the paper trail we are following, we want to know everything we can, about our ancestors: where and how they lived !
Many requests mirror this wish for knowledge, and many answers mirror the wish to help others find this knowledge.

So don't be put off by the fact that so many queries are about census and BMD data,
ask anything about your ancestors you want to know
There will nearly always be someone, (or several) who are only too glad to help.

My guess is that the direct queries are best.
A general thread would probably end up with people posting all sorts of images "in case someone is interested", but if you ask for something specific, then you will probably have more luck.

Bob

Hi Bob

Thanks for all your advice, I know it must be hard keeeping track of everyone on these boards, you do a good job there.

Hi Skb and Casalguidi

I think Casalguidi has answered our questions there Skb, it's great that someone has already started covering the Kent area, I knew other folk would have had the same idea before me, it's just that there are so many posts there must be so many hidden treasures amongst all the various posts and topics, and it's so easy to miss what could bring so much depth to a family tree, a bit like Bob was mentioning earlier there is so much to our ancestry besides all the paperwork, for me finding all the different occupations and all the different lifestyles from people marrying in Ripon Cathedral to some unfortunate souls ending up in the Workhouse or dying in the various wars has been such an eye opener and has been an incentive to keep going when the brick wall syndrome kicks in.

Yours Julie
