WESCOMBE, Anna, George, Lavinia
« on: Sunday 20 May 07 10:28 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking for WESCOMBES from  ?? not sure.  Anna WESCOMBE my 2xgreat granny had a daughter, Lavinia Caroline or Carolina in New Zealand on 12 July 1868.   (Lavinia's father was John WILSON b around 1829 in Swansea.)  I believe Anna had a brother George and they were both living in Victoria, Australia in the late 1850s early 1860s.  Anna Wescombe gave birth to a daughter around 1860/61 (father unknown) in Victoria, Australia and named her Eva Lavinia.  Sadly the little tot died three months later.  Anna 'arrived ' In NZ sometime after 1861.  In 1867 Anna and John WILSON were living in Invercargill, New Zealand and had two children.  A boy, possibly named James (?), and Lavinia.  John Wilson died on 18 Oct 1867 and Anna died on 5 December 1877 leaving two young children.  Her death notice read : "she had no known relatives in the colony and left two young children aged 11 and 9."  I know Anna was from England but don't know where.  I don't have any further information on the Wescombe family at all and would welcome any help.

Does anyone recognise any of the Wescombe names?
If so I would love to hear from you.

Thanks.
Bev

Hello Bev

I don't have any Wescombe connection, but will see whether I can find anything for you.  There is an Edwin Wescombe b Kingstone Somerset abt 1844 who in 1881 (in Barnstaple, Devon) has several children including a Lavinia and an Eva - might be worth researching in case he is some sort of relation of your Anna and these are family names.

Do any of the records you have give an age/approx date of birth for Anna - perhaps her death record?

Anna
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

Hi Bev,

no WESCOMBE connections myself, but here's a tip for you:
if you enter wescombe in "Search RootsChat" (top of the page) you will find several postings from WESCOMBE researchers, some of them in Somerset.

Have a look and see if any of the names are familiar  :)

Good luck,
Bob

There is a WESCOMBE family in Barnstaple, Devon in 1851 headed by Abigail (husband not at home on the day) which includes, among other children, an 11 yr old Anna and a 9 yr old George, both b Taunton, Somerset.

I don't know whether these ages match up to the Anna and George you seek.

Hmmm... this George is still with parents Thomas and Abigail in 1861, which may not fit in with the Australian info you have.

You're welcome, Bev :)

You might also want to have a look at William H. WESTCOMBE (sic) b abt 1824 Somerset who in 1881 is living with his family in Glamorgan - among his 6 children are four daughters b Kingston, Somerset including a 12 yr old "Levina" which is suspiciously close to Lavinia...
