Hi Xinia,

Thats because Robert Sutherland was born:-

Check it on Scotlands People.

 Christening:
 Death:

Hello Elizabeth,
Thanks for that ...I had found that ....but discounted it...due to census return stating born in Dunfermline.. and his marriage or death cert stating Mother Ann Finnie/Finlay .....
Caithness is over 200 miles away from Dunfermline...
Which with the name Sinclair and the date I felt it not to be correct.
I know that errors are made in names and dates and would have considered it...a possibility except for the distance from Dunfermline.

It would be great if it was correct...
So its on with the search...

Thanks anyway.

Hi Xinia.
He could have been born in 1854 prior to Statutory Registrations commencing in Scotland and still be 6 when the 1861 census was taken on the 7th April  in which case there wouldn't be a record of his birth. The parish record of his  christening may have his birth date.
Andy.

All the children born after 1855 show up on the IGI, so John, Thomas and Margaret are there.  The information comes from the statutory registers.

Robert and Anne's marriage shows up on 24 Nov 1851 in Dunfermline.

Given that neither Robert nor his older sister appear on ScotlandsPeople, I suspect that the family worshipped at a church which was not Church of Scotland, but one of the "dissenting" churches.  Their records are not included on ScotlandsPeople.

Anne's name seems to have been recorded variously by different transcribers as Finnie, Finner, Finnen.

Thank you Little Nell, great information really appreciated.
Will try and find out which church ...... I travelled to Dunfermline once already, but looks like time to go again.

Yes Annes maiden name is variable but the only definate clue is that her son born 1859 was called Thomas Finnie Sutherland...
So I am tracing her father through that and have found a Thomas Finnie married to a Mary McCallum that I am almost certain is her Father..

It is just the loose ends that I need ...

Dont suppose you can help  clear up Roberts Father as per previous post??
is he Robert or George (married to Mary short).....

Dont worry if not.  Thanks again

Xinia,

It may well be that you will never find a record of the birth/baptism of Robert - but I wish you luck.

However, you might be able to find the names of the parents of his mother.

I would not assume that Ann's father's given name was Thomas from the given names of Thomas Finnie SUTHERLAND - the mother's maiden surname could quite often be used as a middle name for a later child who did not bear the first name of his (or her) maternal grandparent.

It seems that you need to check out later censuses to find when the parents - Robert SUTHERLAND & Anne (FINNIE?) SUTHERLAND might have died.

And then check out their deaths on the (pay per view - charges are reasonable) ScotlandsPeople site at:
http://scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Scottish death certificates are very informative and give (if the informant knew them) the name and occupation of the father of the deceased, and the name and maiden surname of the mother of the deceased.

However, a free search on SP finds just one death in the Statutory Registers for an Ann* SUTHERLAND, other name FINN*.  Progressively refining the parameters finds Ann SUTHERLAND, other name FINNIE, year of death 1887, age 56, place Dunfermline.

It seems as though it would be worth downloading this certificate.
