James P Bland, any information welcome
« on: Friday 13 July 07 11:21 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I was hoping someone could find some extra information on the following family.

James Preston Bland, b.c. 1881 Keighley/Bingley, Yks, England, married Mary Jane Toothill.
I only know of one child they had, Jack Reginald Bland, b.c. 1906 and registered at Keighley.

A contact told me that James Preston Bland had gone to Canada BC and remarried.
I found this marriage:
James Preston Bland to (mrs)Letty Manuel, 1921.09.06
(firstly could someone tell me if that is in September or June)  ;D

I don't know if his first wife died in England or Canada and if there was other children that came to Canada with them.
Shipping dates would obviously be between 1906 and 1921.

I believe he had children from his second marriage.
If someone could find shipping, deaths, births etc, that appear relevant to this family I would be most appreciatative.
I  did find a possible burial for Lettie Bland at Hatley Memorial Gardens, Colwood, Vancouver, but it doesn't give any other info, ie dates.

Any help truly appreciated.

It looks as though he immigrated to Canada in 1912. You can search the Ancestors on Board site, but you have to pay to view.

Ancestors on Board

Name: BLAND Jas P
Age: 31
Male
Ship name: Laurentic
Departure date: 1912
Departed: Liverpool
Arrived: Quebec, Canada

(The Laurentic landed in Quebec 7 times in 1912.) You can view the manifests for free at the link below (Archives), but they are not transcribed. You will have to search through them manually.

Searched the shipping  manifests, page by page on the site suggested.

Found him, 6th trip, navigation page 18.  ;D, still it could have been the 7th.
Wasn't as bad as I thought for searching, as it is in alphabetical order and divided into catagories ie, British settlers, foreign settlers.
It actually states James Preston Bland, although it looks like James is abbreviated.
Thankyou for that site.

Whilst searching the BC archives found something else of interest.
It appears that James Preston Bland's parents also went to Canada.

Found the death of father:
John Wise Bland, 1940 age 84, at Victoria, BC,

and possible for his mother:
Sarah Bland, died 1936, age 76, Victoria.
Age  match perfect, and with a name like John Wise Bland, well... too easy.

Tried to find in shipping but to no evail.
If anyone can see the shipping for them, that would be brilliant.

I have been sent some additional information on the family:

"James Preston Bland's obit notice: He left two sons, Jack R Bland, San Leonardo CA, USA, William E Bland of Vancouver, BC. and 3 daughters: Mrs Joyce Minger, Mrs Edna Batchelor, Oclulet V. I. and Mrs Vera Lynsne of Victoria."

I have tried to find the other son and 3 daughter in births, deaths and marriages but have had no luck.
If anyone else could have a shot at it, knowing more about these sites that I, that would be wonderful.

Many thanks
Margaret

Update:
It appears that the 3 sisters were step sisters and probably from Letitia (Lettie) first marriage to Pleman Manuel.
Also a google gave me a death notice for a Annie Joyce Minger, so pretty much have sorted this line out.

thanks to all.
