WW1 Service Record - Help
« on: Saturday 13 October 07 14:09 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I am trying to locate the service record of my great grandfather Walter Smith but with a name like Smith I am finding it difficult.

He was born end of 1894. On marriage certificate 25/7/1915 he is a grocer. My grandmother was born Nov 1915 and he is still a grocer on her birth certificate so I am assuming he enlisted after Nov 1915.

I have a photo of him in uniform so I know he served but am struggling to find any information.

Any help appreciated.

Helen

If the photo shows any badges, it may help to narrow down his unit.

Might be worth posting the picture so the experts can look it over.

I am not certain, but I think it looks like The Army Ordnance Corps.

Try looking for a medal card on TNA website.

There are about a dozen Walter SMITH listed in the Army Ordnance Corps, does he have a middle name or initial to help you narrow them down?

No middle name that I am aware of. I don't have his birth certificate but nothing given on his marriage certifictae.

Any other way I can narrow things down?? Down really want to pay to download all of them.

Thanks

Hi Lillian

Assuming that he survived the war, if you know his home address c1918/1919 you could look for any surviving absent voter's lists (usually with the electoral register) .................. regiments and service numbers are often noted for those still in the forces.  These, where they survive, are usually with the main local library/local studes or archives for the area.  They are usually arranged in chronological order by address with no name indexes so it could be quite a search without a known address - depends on the area.

Hi Lillian
Id also go with Army Ordnance Corps.
Are you based in Birstall....Ive been looking through the Spen Guardian in Cleckheaton Library it has lots of info/lists  on men joining up Birstall comes under its coverage.
The uniform isnt an economy one so would date it 1915/16.
