John Thomas Shaw b. abt 1835
« on: Thursday 18 October 07 20:06 BST (UK) »
He was born in Bolton Le Moor, Lancashire, England and married Mary (born in Curthwaite, Cumberland abt 1837)  They had 7 children: John, Edward and Robert were all born in Carlisle.  Joseph Hewitt, Frederick, William Briggs and Mary Isabella were all born in Maryport.  (info obtained from 1881 census in Crosscanonby, Cumberland; he was a gas manager).   My great-grandfather was William Briggs Shaw and I know nothing else about his parents or siblings.  Does anyone have them in their tree; know about marriages, deaths or ?????  William Briggs eventually moved to Tyldesley as he married Sarah Kirkpatrick from there.

Help would be appreciated.

The 1871 census has

2 Tan Yard, XXXXXXX, Maryport (Gas Works is close by)
John F SHAW 35 Manager Trustee Gasworks, Bolton le Moor
Mary 34 Curthwaite
John 7 Carlisle
Edward 3 Carlisle
Robert 1 Carlisle
Thomas HUNTINGTON (boarder) 27 Joiner, Dalston

Curthwaite is close to Dalston - was Thomas a brother?

1851
Dalston
Isabella HUNTINGTON (wid) 42 Gingham weaver, Carlisle
Robt 16 Gingham Weaver, Dalston
Mary 14 Gingham Weaver, Westward
Thomas H 7 Dalston

Mary HUNTINGTON bap 10 July 1836, dau of Thomas and Isabella

Nothing proven ... just a thought.

Ah just spotted your Thomas Hewitt - one of the HUNTINGTON children was Thomas Hewett HUNTINGTON bap 15 Oct 1843 at Dalston. :)

There was an Isabella HEWITT bap in Carlisle in 1809, that seems quite promising but again, nothing proven.

Incidentally, Bolton le Moors is the place we know today as Bolton http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Bolton/

1891

There's a death for a John Thomas SHAW (63)  in Leigh Q3 1897 (8c 189)
also a Mary SHAW (47) Q2 1883 Leigh (8c 157)

Thank you GeoffE.  I had the info for 1891 and 1901 but nothing from before.  I had started to search for Mary Hewitt or Briggs.  Your spelling is different so will follow up.  You have given me a wealth of info and more to look into.  Much appreciated.

I should have mentioned, in the IGI are two marriages for a Thomas HUNTINGTON to an Isabella MORE/MOOR - these were probably too early for the ones I believe may be your couple.  Anyway, there is another Thomas/Isabella HUNTINGTON couple in the 1841 census who don't have a daughter called Mary.

-------------------------------------

I have some good news and some bad news ...

I have found that a marriage took place between a Thomas HUNTINGTON and an Isabella HEWIT :D

The bad news ... it will cost you £15 to find any details :(

The marriage took place at Gretna Green - you can search the index here-

http://www.achievements.co.uk/services/gretna/index.php

At this point, a word of warning about not believing everything you find on the Internet ... here you will find many HUNTINGTONS at http://www.tonyusher.co.uk/huntington.htm - you'll notice that they have Thomas Hewitt HUNTINGTON as the son of the other Thomas HUNTINGTON and Isabella MOOR.

The website may be right or I may be right - the choice is yours! ;)
