Hi,

A quick question before I continue....  were the family quite "well off" so to speak?

I think I have found William and Olivia living with a William Rothwell, Landed Proprietor aged 44 in the 1851 census.  William was the son of William and brother of Olivia.

Regards,
Mo

If William the elder 76 years was the father of Mary Anne Rothwell, and other siblings, there is no William in the children.  There is only a son Henry Joseph.
Also if you work out William the Head's age, he was born about 1807 and could not possibly have had Mary Anne in 1811/2.
So it would have to be William the father as Mary Anne's father, and if so, then William being born in 1807, Mary Anne in 1811, Olivia in 1821, Henry Joseph in 1822 and Eliza Anne in 1824.  Perhaps you are correct, when I think about it, as in the 1851 census, William is 76 and his son 44 being a difference of 32 years.  Maybe William was the first born?  Because when you look again at the 1841 census, he is shown as 60 years, and his daughter Olivia, perhaps named after Williams sister Olivia Frances, is shown as 15 years.  Maybe he had 2 children first, and then the next 3 later.??

In the 1841 census, it shows William being from Everton, which is where she is shown to have come from on her marriage certificate.

There is on LDS birth for Mary Anne Rothwell in 1811 St Peter, Liverpool with parents William Rothwell and Elizabeth Laughton.  Although there is also a marriage for a William Rothwell to Elizabeth Cockshead in 1811 at St Nicholas, Liverpool

There is a death of an Elizabeth Rothwell Dec Qtr 1839 W Derby Vol 20, Page 723.

Witnesses to Mary Anne Rothwell's 2nd marriage to George Bowes Taylor are Mary Lathony, Julliana Brittain, John Bamford, John Singleton.  These don't match up with George Bowes Taylor's siblings.

Do I make any sense?
Comments?

Jackie

Hi,

Well I think I have got the gist of it now! ;D

In the 1841 census William Snr.and Olivia are living in Everton but it only states Born in County not that he came from Everton.  Likewise ages were rounded down, so if he said he was 64 or the enumerator misread a 66 for 64 then he would be recorded as aged 60.  The same goes for Olivia who if aged 19 would have been recorded as 15.

By the way, this is the only Olivia Rothwell in the whole of the country on the 1841 census without stipulating anything else.

I have just taken a look at the 1861 census and found that Olivia is still living with her brother and family in Ellel aged 39.  Interestingly in the relationship column it states that Olivia is a HALF sister.  So it looks likely that William Snr born 1774/5ish did marry at least twice.

Regards,
Mo

Hi again,
Well it certainly looks like there were two marriages.  Funny how the daughter Mary Anne also married twice.  Maybe it ran in the family.  I think I am going to go with two marriages.  I attach some info I got off the IGI for you to look at and see if perhaps there was the two marriages.

Hi Jackie,

Unfortunately there is no way of telling which children belong to which Parents  They only way to sort them out would be to view the actual films and find out the address and occupation of the father.  You can order the films to be viewed at your nearest LDS family history centre by going to the Library section on the site and finding the closest address in your country.  Unless of course some kind soul would look them up at Liverpool, but this is rather a BIG ask.

Looking at Olivia again in various census (still at her brothers home) she also gave her place of Birth as Walton and Walton Breck.

From the Historical Directories site for Liverpool and area:

1827

William Rothwell, Merchant, Breck House, Walton Breck
Rothwell and Son, Merchant, 5 Manesty Lane (Works address)
1829

William Rothwell, Merchant, Beacon Lane, Everton
William Rothwell, Son & Co, 5 Manesty Lane.

Beacon Lane was the address of William and Olivia in the 1841 census.

I suspect that William Talbot Snr died 1854 Lancaster but can`t prove it.  In which case, if it were my family I would be looking to find his will.  This would probably name his living children.

Mo
