Neary family of Tavnagh Straide
« on: Tuesday 08 January 08 01:10 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for my grandmothers relatives.  Her name was Mary Ann Neary, she had a brother Martin, and her fathers name was Patrick.   They lived in Tavena Strade.  Anyone have any info that could help me?

Is 'Tavena strade' the name of a townland or supposed to be a street? It doesn't sound at all Irish.
To search for townlands: www.thecore.com/seanruad
Do you have any idea of dates? 1911 and 1901 census is going to be online eventually (only 1911 Dublin on yet) which might help.

I have seen it spelled several ways.  Tavanaugh, Tavnagh, and Tawnabeg or something like that.  It is very close to Foxford.
There are still some distant relatives in the Foxford area.

'Tavanaugh, Tavnagh, and Tawnabeg or something like that.'- yes, those names make more sense. If you go to website I suggested you sould be able to find 'official' spelling.
Still need to have an idea of dates to offer any suggestions. Living peopl should not be mentioned in posts here but sometimes because of privacy issues it is more difficult to find recently deceased people than those born in 1800s.

I have been to the website you mentioned, thank you.  It is impressive.  I have come up with either Tawnagh Beg or Tawnagh More as the most likely contenders.  They are both in the Barony of Gallen, and the Civil Parish of Templemore.
My great grandfather Patrick Neary was born in 1842, my grandmother in 1882.  She married James Leo Harkins from Scotland,  they married on 29th July 1907,  and they had 8 living children together, 7 daughters and my father, who was named after my grans brother Martin.  My dad was born in 1918, his name was Martin Francis Harkins, but went by Frank.

If you think there are relatives still in the area how about writing to the local paper and asking for any of them to get in touch (not sure what the best paper would be).
Have you tried looking on IGI for your grandparents children? Many (not all) Irish births 1864-c1880 are there.

I have called several people in the area that I have gotten info on from a couple of different sources, and been able to add a little more info to the puzzle.
I am not familiar with IGI, can you tell me what it is?

I have been unlucky so far.  None of the people I am searching for are listed on IGI.  It is nice to know that there are so many resources available, though.
I have called the contacts in Foxford and they have a family tree that they are going to photocopy and mail to me.  Hopefully it will also include some dates which will make it easier to find records.
