Bankruptcy
« on: Monday 21 January 08 20:00 GMT (UK) »
I have just discovered one my ancestors Charles Broadist was declared bankrupt in 1853. The following appeared in The Jurist:
insolvent debtors who have filed their petitions in the Court
of Bankruptcy and have obtained an interim order for
       protection from process:
Charles Broadist, Oxford, cook, 24 Jan at 11, County
            Court of Oxfordshire

Does anyone know how I can find out more please?

Have you looked in the London Gazette?  You can often trace the various stages of a banruptcy in there.

http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/

and possibly the gentlemans magazine

http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/ilej/

and of course the local paper.

thanks for the links.  I will follow them up - the local paper is more difficult, it is not on line and I am in Canada.

Thanks for that info - I have discovered I can access through being an OU student and have just spent a happy morning browsing.
