Mary Ann Fleetwood/Newsome
« on: Saturday 08 January 05 19:13 GMT (UK) »
We are trying to find  Mary Ann Fleetwood's origins. She had two sons John and Charles Fleetwood in Mirfield Yorkshire in the mid 1800's and then married George Newsome in 1851. Her father was John Fleetwood, a tailor. Her son John is my husband's G.G.Grandfather but  until we find her father we cant link her to his early tree.
Does anyone know where she came from? Any information would be most welcome.
Regards,
Carol

Hi, Wendy,
No unfortunately we don't know how old she was. On the marriage certificate it just says 'of age' which we assume to be over 21 or a slightly more mature woman. She had John in 1836 and Charles in 1839 so working on the assumption that she was 20 when she had  John she would have been in her early 30's in 1851. This is pure speculation of course. Sorry I cant be of more help!
Carol.

Hi Wendy,
They married on September 11th (!) 1851 at the Parish Church, Batley.
Geroge is a Rag Merchant and a widower, resident in Batley at time of marriage, father Isaac Newsome, clothier.
Mary Ann a spinster, no profession, resident in Mirfield, father John Fleetwood, Tailor. Both of 'full age'.
Witnesses James Richardson and Joseph ??Northwick (very hard to read).
Do you have a lead?

Regards,
Carol.

Hi Carol

Like I say it the closest possibility I could find and that was with leaving birthplace open.  I know it would mean george was considerably older than Mary going on her age for the 71 census below

so living at Nab lane Mirfield is

Mary Ann Newsome widowed aged 57 Seamstress and Guardian born Mirfield
Annie Elizabeth Welson 8 born Leeds
George Albert Welson 6 born Leeds

both children are down as Boarder's

I'll let you mull this lot over for now.  If I fnd anything else to connect to her I will post it here as well

A bit of other information for you to consider -

At Mirfield parish church Mary Anne Fleetwood son's were baptised :

John - 29 May 1836
Charles - 31 Mar 1839

Other Fleetwood baptisms there include the children  (John 1824, Jemima 1826 & Joseph 1829)  of Abraham Fleetwood & his wife Elizabeth (Betty) Jessop - married 1 Dec 1822

This Abraham Fleetwood (son of another Abraham Fleetwood) was baptised at Hartshead in 1802 - along with siblings (Rebecca 1798, John 1800, & Ann 1804)

Harriet Fleetwood (father also Abraham) was baptised 1807 at Mirfield

Harriet had a child baptised at Mirfield (Elizabeth) in 1825 herself.

I think it is possible that Abraham (senior) and his family moved from Hartshead to Mirfield arounf 1805/6 - and that Mary Ann is the daughter of John - bapt, in Hartshead in 1800.
